Optical Imaging

Our Optical Imaging Facility is based on
a state of the art technology that improves the performance of the
conventional light microscope through the electronic capturing and
processing of images. This technology not only expands the microscope’s
limit of resolution but also allows the study of biological functions in a
safe, fast and sensitive manner. Another basic capability of our imaging
system is that it quantifies the light emission from optical probes, which
for many applications is a low intensity signal. |

Briefly, the microscope based imaging
system allows the studies concerning the dynamic localization and
quantification of intracellular calcium mobilization and how these events
correlate with electrophysiological properties of cells under study. The
specific aims are:
-
Expand the capabilities of the facility
to support a wider set of experimental protocols as required by
participating faculty.
-
Support the participation of faculty in
comprehensive short courses concerned with the theory, practice and new
developments of the imaging field.
-
Stimulate collaborative interactions
among researchers through the organization of workshops, seminars and
informal meetings and consultant visits.
