Research
Center for Minority Institution (RCMI)
The RCMI was established by the National Institutes of Health
(NIH), under the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). The beauty
of this Program lies with its mission: to give minority academic
institutions that award doctoral degrees in the health sciences the
opportunity to conduct research in a more competitive research environment,
thereby meeting the unique and specific needs of the institutions. The
RCMI supports the infrastructure and human health sciences. Here at UCC, we
have been very fortune for going strong, since our first award in 1986; a
new competitive proposal was approved for a five-year cycle (2004-2009).
Over the past twenty one years, we have focused our needs on the creation of
common areas such as: Animal Research Resources Center, Common
Instrumentation Area, Computer and Research Information, Scientific Human
Resources Development Unit, Office of Assistant Dean for Research, HIV
Laboratory and HIV Registry. The research centers are focused in
neuroscience, cellular and molecular biology and retrovirus (HIV). Our
scientific community has gained a great deal of experience since the
inception of the RCMI at UCC; publications have increased and new proposals
have been awarded. We feel proud of the progress we have made and what we
have become. From our first computers to a present state-of-the-art
research environment, this Program is truly accomplishing its set goals.
